Downtown New Haven apartments aren’t easy to come by. The one that you finally got (congratulations!) is unfortunately a bit smaller that you preferred and it doesn’t come with stellar natural light sources to brighten things up.
None of that is a problem! You can still enjoy your apartment in New Haven with a few simple lighting tricks.
- Natural Light – Cash in on what natural light you have by picking the right window treatments. If you have a small apartment, dark and heavy draperies will visually consume much of your space. Even when opened, such drapes block out much needed natural light. Avoid both problems by buying curtains that a lightly colored and made of a lightweight fabric. You can even use sheers in place of curtains to let in as much light as possible. (These work well if you also have blinds that you can use for privacy when needed.)
- Dark Corners – There are few things more ominous to an adult or a child than creepy, dark corners. They can make your apartment feel smaller, too. In rooms where this is a big problem, invest in tall floor lamps that you can tuck into the corner. If you prefer to have a table there, select a tall and majestic table lamp that will still light the space and draw guests’ eyes to it.
- Overhead Lighting – Lighting near the ceiling helps to project light throughout the room. This is excellent for parties or simply going through daily tasks.
- Task Lighting – In small apartments in New Haven, it’s easy to think that you need only overhead lighting. If you’ll be working, reading, or performing a task in a specific area it’s beneficial to have task lighting, lighting that is directed into a certain area. This light should be supplemental to overhead lighting, not replace it. Avoid bare bulbs or any other light source that causes a glare and irritates your eyes after prolonged exposure.
